Sourced from reputable independents, Signatory Vintage, cask #900658 was a first-fill Sherry butt and a fairly active cask at that, with more of an old-school attack then a clean, contemporary one. Pickled ginger, struck match, burnt orange, hazelnut and hints of hessian sack give the aroma a sulphury slant, though there's some redemption from the latent fruitiness. The flavours follow with roasted hazelnut, marzipan, ginger biscuit and orange infused dark chocolate - those 'rustic' notes adding a burnt fruit toast character to the finish

A 2007 Ledaig single malt from the ninth release of La Maison du Whisky's Artist series, matured in a single refill sherry butt for a decade, before being bottled in 2019. Peaty aromas of buttery toast, spicy ginger, candied lemon and liquorice fill the nose, over waves of earthy peat smoke. The palate offers notes of coconut milk, seashells, smouldering driftwood, creamy porridge and green apples, as well as medicinal peat smoke.

When you look at the almost transparent color of this Ledaig, you know straight away that the cask will have no influence on its aromatic and taste palette. Both earthy and marine, it is also rustic and at the same time very elegant and easy to access that does not exclude complexity. It expresses in a way that could not be more natural all the paradoxes that make the reputation of this single malt from the Isle of Mull.

The well-balanced initial nose is characterized by notes of caramel and bitter orange. Allowed to breathe, it becomes exotic (mango, guava) and spicy (pepper, cinnamon). The deep attack is nobly malty and lush (rosemary, thyme). Red fruit (Morello cherry, pomegranate) brings freshness to the end of the palate. The silky finish is vanilla and herbaceous (gentian). The retro- nasal olfaction is tertiary (mushroom, date, tobacco).

Inspired by the old ancient Blackpitts area just behind the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery based in Newmarket. This area was synonymous with many industries and in particular malting houses. Blackpitts was traditionally home to some of the largest barley malting houses in Ireland. By using smoke from peat to dry the barley during the malting process, the resulting peated malt produces a distinctive smoky taste profile which is the signature of a Peated Single Malt.
However, what makes Teeling Blackpitts so unique is the triple distillation process, which reduces some of the medicinal character you would get from a traditional Scottish Peated Single Malt and allows the more barbeque smoke characteristic to shine. This is then combined with signature Teeling innovative cask maturation using both ex-bourbon and ex-Sauternes white wine casks, which is bottled at 46% with no chill filtration to produce a truly different and unique expression of Teeling and Irish Whiskey. The inspiration for the use of these casks came from a previous bottling of Teeling 24-Year-Old Single Malt which was honoured as the “World’s Best Single Malt” in 2019 at the World Whiskies Awards.
Tasting Notes
An inviting nose where barbeque smoke and cloves are intermingled with fresh notes of butterscotch and orange peel.
On the palate, a fascinating blend of Applewood smoke, honey and all spice are married with stewed pears and fresh grilled pineapple. This whiskey finishes with the return of a savoury smoke over a lingering wood undertone, which combines delightfully with notes of salted caramel.
