Shiraz
Grant Burge’s Filsell vineyard with near century old vines is considered one of the best vineyards in the Barossa Valley and consistently produces fruit of great intensity and concentration. Planted in 1920, this vineyard also produces some of the fruit for Grant Burge Wines, flagship Shiraz, the highly acclaimed Meshach.
It is however still vibrant, rich and full bodied with intense red berry fruits, ripe blackberries and black pepper.
Sean O?Riada is one of the heroes of modern Ireland. A talented musician and composer, he is credited with taking traditional Irish music out of the kitchens and pubs of Ireland and putting it on the concert stages of the world. He died, prematurely, in 1971, the year Clonakilla was established by John Kirk. He was John?s cousin.
2022 was a cool vintage with gentle ripening progressing well into autumn. The O?Riada is made from fruit picked from our estate vineyard and other fine sites in Murrumbateman and Hall. It?s a quintessential Canberra Shiraz, medium bodied with red berry and floral themes and plenty of cool-climate spice.
One of Australia's greatest value red wines, not only for being affordably priced but because this wine is made with grapes that were hand pressed following fermentation. This gentle extraction method brings out smooth and silky textures in all of the wines made at d'Arenberg, accentuating fruity aromas and brightness of flavour.
Pure Shiraz that's affordable doesn't get better.
Winery notes:
This wine will have you second guessing as it skips between red fruits and lifted spice notes on the one hand to more brooding, dark, ashen, earthy aromas on the other. A sign of the vintage no doubt. The seasonal conditions are even more evident on the palate where flavour, tannin and acid are in perfect balance. There is an impressive amount of concentration in this wine but at the same time it feels somewhat more restrained compared to other more in your face, rustic Dead Arm vintages. Particularly when we look at the tannin profile which is a relatively fine example for this wine. The benefit of all of this of course is that it is immediately drinkable upon release
We think Don't Tell Gary represents everything good about Shiraz and with an appealingly quirky edge thanks to being made from grapes grown in the Grampian Mountains in Victoria rather than the better known Barossa Valley. Don't Tell Gary was first made in 2014, winemaker Jo Nash discovered an exceptional parcel of Shiraz from the Grampians which she gently crushed, then tucked away in some ridiculously expensive French oak barrels to age for 12 months. The wine speaks for itself – minimal intervention, purity of fruit and a long refreshing finish. Great drinking now at an incredibly accessible price.
A dark cherry colour leading to a nose with aromas of cherries with spiced plum, black pepper and spice with subtle integration of oak.
The palate is round with serious intent; bright florals, juicy fruit and a lifted integration of earthy spice note and black pepper. Soft mouth coating tannin, a creamy texture and subtle oak provides a poised, elegant finish.

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz is one of the great Aussie reds with its dramatic deep purple colour and velvety smooth tannins adding a seductive savoury appeal to the meaty, espresso, black olive and spicy flavours in this great red, which regularly garners scores of close to 100 out of 100 from such wine luminaries as the internationally followed Wine Advocate.
We stand behind this great red here at Regional too and have secured six precious bottles.
What the critics say
93/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2018 vintage)
"A 72/28% blend from Glaetzer?s stomping ground of Ebenezer, the vines 50 and 100yo. Grenache had minimal oak contact, the shiraz matured in used hogsheads for 16 months. It?s Glaetzer style, pure and simple: love it or leave it."
This wine is a deep red with a bright magenta hue. On the nose there are vibrant aromatics of red and black berry fruits, a lift of violet florals, clove spice and mixed garden herbs. The palate is dominated by a lively burst of berry fruits, which are well framed by fine, powdery tannins. Juicy plum and blackberry flavours persist through the finish, with sweet spice to close
Full bodied and super flavoursome with structure to see it age for decades. Here's a Shiraz for the long haul, which is named in honour of pioneer Clare Valley winemaker Jim Barry. In 1964, Jim purchased 70 acres of prime land from Duncan McRae Wood and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz - a momentous purchase and great decision for the company's legacy.
