Pinot Gris
A sumptuous blend of Gisborne Pinot Gris 457 and M2 clones from the Ashwood vineyard on Back Ormond Road made by Steve Voysey. These clones are sourced from Italy and France and receive a combination of fermentation in barrel and stainless steel to create a drier style of Pinot Gris that still delivers the drinkability and food matching ease of Pinot Grigio. It is a complex, textural wine with soft acidity and openness that only barrel fermentation allows.
Winemaker Steve Voysey is one of Gisborne's most experienced and is a dab hand at all varietals in this region, having worked for decades there and learning the seasonal variations in depth.
This soft, fruity, off dry Pinot Gris is a fresh light bodied wine to drink on its own or with slightly spicy food.
Central Otago makes famously dry, concentrated styles of Pinot Gris and Te Kano Life Pinot Gris is an excellent example. Flavours of peach and pear flesh out the body with ginger and spicy aromas adding depth.
The grapes were hand harvested from the Jerome vineyard which has naturally low vigour and sandy soils, which produce smaller than usual grapes with intense flavours, which produce this structured and complex Gris.
A little old oak fermentation adds flesh and weight to this medium sweet style of Pinot Gris, which has rich flavours and characterful spicy white pear aromas. This North Canterbury Riesling has residual sugar between 10 and 20 grams per litre, which is beautifully balanced by fresh acidity which adds purity and tension to this lively wine.
This is made from organically certified grapes grown on the banks of the Waipara River in North Canterbury.
The region's cool nights and hot days add length to the ripening season, which makes it easy to ripen grapes with rich flavours.
* Terrace Edge was named the New Zealand Organic Vineyard of the Year in 2018 and this year was named Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Winery of the Year.
This Pinot Gris is characterised by ripe stone fruit, particularly white peach and nectarine notes, with hints of floral and ginger spice characters. The mouth feel is very textural – dry and weighty with fleshy stone fruit and fine textured tannins that give a long balanced profile. A serious style of Pinot Gris to be enjoyed now or cellared for up to 5 years.
Light and golden in colour. Fresh aromas of pear, toasted pine nuts, and lifted Turkish delight awaken your senses. Textured, structural, dry, fresh stone fruit roasted almond flavours mingle with fresh thyme and wild fennel. This multi-layered Pinot Gris is opulent yet clean, bright and juicy. The wine?s poised, beautiful texture leads to a well-balanced, persistent finish.
Dry, surprisingly creamy and full bodied, this lovely new Pinot Gris is made in a Chardonnayesque style with full oak fermentation in old oak barrels and partial malolactic fermentation to give its creamy textural qualities.
Winemaker Jannine Rickards has outdone herself here, producing a new take on a much loved grape and wine.
To preserve the delicate aromatics and fruit character of Pinot Gris the grapes were hand harvested in the cool of the early morning. Pressing was whole bunch with only the free run and lightest of pressings used to minimise unattractive phenolics. Traditional 100% barrel fermentation in old French oak with extended lees contact and stirring to give the wine mid palate weight, texture and complexity. After a period of 12 months in barrel the wine was fined using natural products and carefully filtered for bottling.
Pear, lime zest, almond and cream soda on the nose accentuated by an intense mineral character. A very aromatic Pinot Gris with fantastic cool climate freshness from a notably cool growing season with an intensity coming from the unusually small bunches. The Palate is laden with fruit flavours including many types of pear (Anjou, Williams and Nashi), white peach and citrus. A beautifully textured mid palate is complimented by a vibrant vein of acidity that runs through the wine giving it drive and length. Valli Pinot Gris is great for food pairing, delicious on its own and very age worthy.
A full bodied, weighty and textural, dry Pinot Gris with ripe white pear aromas and depth of flavour. It's made from Villa Maria's Seddon vineyard in the Awatere Valley. Fermentation was in a combination of stainless steel tanks and old oak, which result in a textural dry white with great balance of acidity provided by this cool climate vineyard site.
White haven Pinot Gris is a versatile dry style with flavours of fresh nashi pears and crisp red apples, a medium body and textural finish. It's a great wine for everyday drinking with or without food, a lovely aperitif style to enjoy at lunch and early evening.
Whitehaven Wines began life in 1994 as a romantic business for a couple of corporate escapees, Sue and Greg White, who had given up life in the rat race of Auckland for another kind of life aboard their yacht. When sailing around the country, they took shelter in the Marlborough Sounds from Pacific storms and fell in love with the region. An easy thing to do when harbouring in the spectacularly pristine waters of the Sounds. They decided to settle there on terra firma once more and try their hands at wine production, hiring a winemaker and beginning a business which has now been around for 26 years. Greg has sadly passed away now, leaving a legacy as well as his wife and daughter, Sam, to run the winery.
Their winemaker is Peter Jackson.
