Edition 10.3 / 114 ppm / 6 years old
Distilled in 2013 from the 2012 harvest, the Octomore 10.3 has been brought home by farmer James Brown. Taking on the challenge of growing Islay Barley, he braces the conditions of the wet and wild west coast to combine an exploration of Islay terroir and stratospheric smoke.
For the first time, the .3 is matured for six aged years but crucially only in ex-American oak. These top-quality casks have gently coaxed this Octomore spirit into life in Warehouse 16, next to our 10.1 edition. The components of our 10.1 and 10.3 are so similar, the distinct flavour difference must be owed to the barley?s respective growing location.
A guide to Octomore numbering by Bruichladdich
.1
? Our Octomore .1 editions are distilled from 100% Scottish barley. In recent years they have been primarily aged only in ex-American oak, in varying percentages of different ex-bourbon and ex-Tennessee whiskey casks. They are the backbone of each new series as they demonstrate the raw character of the clean Octomore spirit balanced with the neutral American oak casks.
.2
? Our Octomore .2 editions are distilled from 100% Scottish barley, as per their .1 counterpart. Crucially, they are differentiated by a European oak maturation. Think along the lines of ex-Amarone, ex-Sauternes, ex-Austrian sweet wines and the like. Each edition has a different composition of casks, and the decision lies in the fate of our head distiller.
.3
? Octomore .3 editions are distilled from 100% Islay barley. They are single estate, single vintage bottlings from barley grown on friend and farmer James Brown?s land. Octomore farm lies around two miles south of Bruichladdich Distillery, with the name for the series originating from the farm, where the Montgomery?s once distilled. These whiskies are generally matured in a mixture of ex-American and ex-European oak, subject to change for each edition.
.4
? Our .4 editions first came onto the scene during out 7th series of the world?s most heavily peated single malt. They introduce the influence of the tannic, spicey, brutishness of Virgin Oak. Both Octomore 07.4 and 08.4 were influenced, but not matured full-term, in fresh oak casks. Occasionally, just to keep us doing a ?Bruichladdich? and keeping you on your toes, we replace the .4 edition in the series with something weird and wonderful, like our Octomore 10 year old from the Octomore 9s Dialogos series.
Batch No. 007 of Tamdhu Batch Strength single malt is a fruity, nutty whisky that has been matured exclusively in sherry casks. Aromas of cinnamon, oak, vanilla sponge and praline fill the nose, complemented by notes of baked figs, baking spices, pavlova, raspberries, caramelised apricots, oak and ripe clementines throughout the palate.
14 years old, this Glentauchers-Glenlivet bottled by Cadenhead has been matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. With pear drops, peaches, treacle and a touch of nutmeg on the nose, we've landed in Scotland for pudding on a winter's night. Flavours of poached pears and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate flakes come alive on the palate. The finish is a wee glass of mulled wine, rich and warming with orange slices, crushed cloves and dark chocolate.
This bottling has been matured in re-charred Bourbon barrels and is light and fruity through and through. The nose is vibrant and refreshing with notes of zesty citrus, moving to sweet raisins covered in chocolate. The sweetness piles on the palate with creamy vanilla custard and marzipan. Finally, delicate creme brulee light pear drops and lemon fondant send this lovely light dram on its way.
This Tamnavulin from Cadenhead has spent 14 years maturing in a small selection of ex-bourbon barrels. Aromas of juicy stone fruits soaked in syrup, fresh pineapple, peaches and grapefruit kick off this summery feeling dram. Zesty lemons with banana cake covered in caramel buttercream arrive on the palate. Finally, warm fruits, flat cola and chocolate biscuits come through to finish.
This special release from Benriach is the first expression in a century to be produced entirely using barley malted from Benriach's historic floor maltings. This whisky has been matured in both bourbon and virgin oak barrels. This brings out notes of barley sugar, almond fudge, orchard apples, vanilla and honeyed pear. A long lasting finish is full of malty notes.
The peated whisky made at the Tobermory distillery is called Ledaig (pronounced le-chig) and this new whisky comes from the 'smoky' selection of the discovery series by Gordon & MacPhail. On first sniff, there is a rich plume of peat smoke, becoming tinged with a rubbery (burnt tires) notes and cured smoky meat. To taste there is a weighty, oily sweetness, with vanilla and stewed fruits coming through, followed by lime and a kick of peat smoke again, and chocolate in the finish.
Highland Park Cask Strength Release No. 4 opens with enticing aromas of toasted coconut, driven by the ex-bourbon casks, along with crushed lemons and cedarwood; there?s a delightful hint of Turkish Delight in the aromatic peat smoke too, thanks to the influence of the ex-port casks. Intriguing flavours of zesty pink grapefruit and fragrant rose water emerge on the palate, expertly balanced by earthier suggestions of toasted oak and heather-rich peat, while the long finish reveals exotic sun-baked spices and a ribbon of liquorice running through the final breath of floral peat smoke.
Matured in ex-sherry hogsheads, ex-sherry butts and ex-bourbon barrels from across the Arran portfolio between 1997 and 2017. Special selected and blended by Distillery Manager, Stewart Bowman, bearing his seal of approval.
Distillery Notes:
Nose: Toffee apples, vanilla, cinnamon spice, really clean and prominent orange blossom notes, star anise.
Palate: Silky smooth and balanced, light liquorice, menthol herbs, honey.
Finish: Long and lingering with orange zest and fresh floral notes. Complex and rewarding.
This limited edition Arran Single Malt has been specially selected by our Distillery Manager to be bottled at 17 years old. This rare and stand-alone edition shines a different light on our precious Single Malt, aged in a mixture of first and second-fill sherry hogsheads and first-fill bourbon barrels.
We serve our whisky at 46% ABV which means it stands up well to dilution. We never add caramel or strip flavour out using chill filtration.
Commercial description
Welcome to the second of our core range Single Malts to be released from LAGG Distillery, the LAGG Single Malt Corriecravie Edition.
The Corriecravie Edition is bottled in limited quantities once a year.
The spirit for the Corriecravie Edition is matured initially in Bourbon Barrels before being finished for approximately 6 months in Oloroso Sherry Hogsheads sourced directly from producer Miguel Martin in Jerez, Spain.
For this edition, we have used Concerto malted barley and water from our own borehole. Our chosen yeast and fermentation time allows us to create the full-bodied flavour we are looking for in this distillation.
The taste profile is slightly richer than our Kilmory expression bringing to the fore notes of sweeter spices and rich fruits.
The Corriecravie Edition is bottled at 55% ABV, without chill filtration and with no added colour.
Nose
Dark chocolate and spiced red berries
Palate
