Burgundy
Very pretty pale golden yellow in colour with light greenish glints. Bright, luminous and limpid. The nose is young, fresh and vivacious in a whirlwind of floral, fruity scents. The taste is lively, pleasant and perfumed, revealing lemon and verbena on a fine mineral background. We discover the pleasure of drinking for sheer enjoyment. The finish is pleasant leaving the mouth tingling with an airy freshness.
Elegance in the bottle, this silky red Burgundy is dense and vibrant; walking a fine tightrope of fresh acidity supporting the full body and impressive layers of flavour. It is made by the father-son winemaking team, Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who together manage nine hectares of vineyard land, from which they make 24 wines at regional, village, premier and grand cru level.
Their vineyards hae ploughed since the 1990s with no use of weedkillers and insecticides, which is, in their words "In order to favour microorganism and therefore the essential balance for the vine’s growth. Since 2011, we use organic protective treatments."
Excellent Chardonnay from the Puligny-Montrachet appellation in the C?te de Beaune. This is a crisp, dry wine. The nose shows notes of lemon and a subtle, chalky minerality. The palate is crisp, with a malic apple acidity.
Ch?teau de Puligny has benefited in recent years from the arrival of winemaker Etienne de Montille in 2001. Drastic lowering of yields and the reduction of oak has resulted in an increase in quality. Consequently, the wines of Ch?teau de Puligny exhibit great concentration and elegance.
A rare French Pinot Noir made in tiny volumes - only 437 bottles were produced. It comes from one of the best vintages on record and is available only online and at the Domaine Thomson cellar door in Central Otago - as well as three precious bottles we have managed to secure for Regional Wines & Spirits.
This sumptuous savoury wine has delicate floral style with notes of smoked meat and mushrooms-meet-earthy fresh forest aromas. This is an outstanding red from a small winery in Central Otago, Domaine Thomson, whose owners also have a small amount of highly prized land in Burgundy, France; home to the grapes in this great wine.
Trapet-Rochelandet is a small winery with a big name in Burgundy, which has been owned by the same family for many generations and produces elegant Pinot Noirs with silky structure and longevity. This is a beautiful age worthy wine that can last the distance and also drinks beautifully now; especially great when paired with slow cooked duck confit.
The first traces of the Bichot family date back to 1214. They settled in Burgundy in 1350, in their fief of Ch?teauneuf-en-Auxois. The family's coat of arms has not changed since nor has its symbol, a doe (biche).
Alb?ric Bichot joined the company in the early 90s and took over its management in 1996. Though he fully respects family traditions, he is completely focused on the future.
A famous C?te de Nuits appellation, as much for its size as for its famous wines, Gevrey-Chambertin is known for its wide diversity of terroirs. No white wines are produced here; only Pinot Noir grapes are grown. The vineyards face east and southeast. "La Justice" is a very old vineyard that is located in the middle and the best part of the alluvial fan, which combines all of the geological matter that has been moved down through the valley over the millennia. "La Justice" owes its name to the fact that these vineyards belonged to the Lord of Gevrey, the Abbot of Cluny, who had all of the power in this part of the land that had been given to him. Here, "justice" means "jurisdiction" from the Latin JURISDICTIO, or "the right to administer justice", and by extension, power, authority, control.
Tasting notes...
Aromas of red fruit on the nose (black cherry, blackberry). Subtle hints of oak are complemented by notes of liquorice. Over time, notes of spices, forest undergrowth, even musky notes will develop. This wine is silky, structured, tannic and well-balanced on the palate. The finish features all the fruitiness of the first nose.
