Wine growers in the northern Rhone since 1481, the Chave family represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the production of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne on the planet. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut and a degree in oenology at Davis. It was at that time that he completely replanted vineyards on the family?s original estate in Saint-Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900?s when phylloxera hit the region.
Jean-Louis Chave Selections, his negociant line which sources grapes from various areas in the northern Rhone, represents a more accessible way for the consumer to experience the wines of the Chave family.

This complex and affordable Chianti Classico is a full bodied, ripe and powerful wine made from a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, each grape contributing depth, body and balance to the wine.
This brand was traditionally produced by a well known cooperative with over 60 different grape growers contributing to the blend but the brand has now been acquired by Tenute Piccini, which employs the highly respected consultant oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella.
THE CHIANTI CLASSICO APPELLATION
Chianti Classico is the heart of the wider Chianti production zone and its wines are distinguished by a trademarked black rooster on their labels. The wines of Chianti Classico are higher in quality and noticeably so in taste than wines labelled Chianti, which come from a broader area in Tuscany. The wines taste better because the vines are planted on hillsides with a higher degree of iron rich soils and a greater diurnal temperature range, which provides more powerful, riper fruit flavours, which are balanced by higher acidity thanks to the cooler night time temperatures.
The Sangiovese grape must make up 80% of all wines labelled Chianti Classico compared to 70% Sangiovese for wines labelled Chianti.
Chianti was first defined as a wine producing sub region within Tuscany in 1716 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III, whose wanted to protect the integrity of the wines and prevent fraud. The Chianti Classico Wine Consortium was formed in 1924 with the distinctive Black Rooster trademark chosen to feature on the labels.

Once regarded as a renegade wine, Antinori Tignanello has been a trend setter from the start and was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet) and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region that didn?t use white grapes. Today it is a blend of Sangiovese (68%) with the balance being Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Complex floral aromas lead into structured dark fruit, mocha and spice flavours in a wine with a medium body and beautifully balanced long finish.
The history of Tignanello
Tignanello was the first Sangiovese on the record to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with non traditional Tuscan grape varieties (specifically Cabernet Sauvignon) and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region that didn?t use white grapes in the blend. All up, a big call.
Piero Antinori first discovered the use of non indigenous grapes, and more specifically, those used in Bordeaux through his uncle Marchese Mario Incisa della Rochetta who had a vineyard at Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, and was making a wine using grapes better known as Bordeaux classics, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot et al.
At first, this was for his own personal consumption, however was released in 1968 as the legendary Sassicaia.
Piero went off and forged his own path in Tuscany making wines from the local Sangiovese but also a select few made from Bordeaux grapes. This wine is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc - and as these wines are prohibited in Chianti, the wine is an IGT and not a DOCG.
You?ll recognise the same great flavours of O?Hara?s Irish Red with trademark hints of sweet caramel and mild nutty biscuit, all amplified with a smooth creamy mouth feel and a nice warming finish.
Dark ruby red in colour and pours with a dense smooth creamy head. The addition of a pinch of roast barley during the brewing process lends a distinctive bite which is balanced by a crisp medium bitterness. The caramalt flavours follow all the way to the end.

FINALIST AT THE 2024 WEST COAST IPA CHALLENGE
Much like a game of Tetris ? and Tracy?s tank plan at the Brewery ? the flavours and aromas of our 2024 West Coast IPA Challenge entry certainly slot right in to place. A dank and resinous aroma greets you at the glass, while the palate delivers orange peel, apricot and tropical fruits, followed by a crisp, assertive bitterness and an oily, smooth finish.
This wine takes it name from an old way Hungarian reference to the vineyard from where it comes. Mandol?s is one of the Oremus vineyards and it is only planted with Furmint, the most respected grape variety of the region. During the weeks leading up to the harvest, the state of ripening of the grape is systematically checked and the golden yellow, health and ripe bunches are picked. A must with great density is obtained using a delicate and gentle pressing. Fermentation is in new wood barrels, which are carefully prepared, and takes between eight and 12 days. The wine is aged in 136-litre small barrels, which are typical of the region.
A super tasty, super smooth Pinot Noir made from grapes grown in Martinborough and vinified in Hawke?s Bay at Clearview Estate. This is a superb red fruited wine with its lively and youthfully fruity Pinot summer berry flavours. It?s great value for a wine that just sneaks in under $30. Clearview Estate Winery in Hawke?s Bay sourced grapes from Ferry Road in Martinborough to make this tasty Pinot Noir and this is the second time it?s been produced (2019 was the first). The wine was made at Clearview Estate with about 40% whole bunch fermentation, all wild fermented followed by aging in French oak, 18% new, for a year.

Clearview Estate is one of oldest, most well established wineries in Hawke's Bay and is situated on the Te Awanga Coast, south of Napier. It's a great place to visit for tastings at the cellar door as well as lunch in the dappled shade of the established courtyard area. The winery was founded by Tim Turvey, winemaker and co-owner. The current winemaker is the multi talented Matt Kirby.
